Prussian Customs NCO. You can't see the wappen clearly from the scan and the auto sizing of the pics but it is the type found on colonial tropenhelm. See, Reiner Herrmann: Militarische Kopfbedeckungen der Kaiserzeit pg 189. This is a French post card printed at the bottom is: Schlocht (Vosges) Gendarme Allemand au Poteau Frontiere (German policeman at frontier post). Brian

Brian,

Wonderful photo! I believe this individual is a RG. These Reich's Gendarme wore the Reichesmilitär wappen (colonial type). These guys were the official police for Alsace-Lorraine. Their helmets are also marked RG. We have and a lot of time talking about LG types, but very little about RG. In both cases, these are not exactly military folks, nor are they customs. Love to have a photo like this though!

Hi Joe:
That is a very cool helmet. I did not know that you had that beauty hidden away!! Many thanks for showing your helmet and clarifying the description of this individual. I have another post card of this type which I will post here once I get it scanned at school. This one is also French but taken by a different company. Take note of the individual peeking out the window in this photo because it relates to the other one that I will post. Brian

Sven, wie geht's?

Then the half of them went full to the army as Feldgendarmerie staff, together with qualified army NCOs the were the military police, traffic regulation service, POW guarding...

Did this also include the Landgendarmarie?

Geo

Sven it is GREAT to have your police knowledge!
Ok many questions we have been unable to answer.

1. Alsace-Lorraine had Reiches Gendarme (RG) like the picture above that were provicial to Reiche's territory.
2.As George said, there was also a Landesgendarme (LG) both foot and mounted which were rural.

But they were part of the ministry of war, not interior or justice, with combat status in wartimes.
This blows my mind!!! It is not how helmets have been looked at. Do you know of a uniform guide to spot LG types? A source to explain ministry of war connections?

There have been a LOT of Lg helmets sold as Gd. Dragoon due to the similar wappen. More info please!

The more we learn, the less we know. The confusion of terms is common is every language, and when dialects are thrown in, it gets worse. But even with the problems of limited information, we still have a better chance of understanding these things than we do of understanding US tax code.

Or as we say: "The EU-regulations for candy bars are thicker than the bible..."

My understanding is that the regulations for beer are rather straight forward though.

One more from Sven: ( Great Info, Thanks!)

... The Leibgendarmerie was two companies strong and in reality the closest life guards to the king/kaiser and foreign high ranking visitors, absolutely no police authority - Gens d' armes in the old meaning.

Sven

George and Sven we had an old thread around here on these guys. Good to look at them through a police lens. One unit for the Kaiser the other for his wife. ColRon showed a helmet.

The dragoon officer leading these guys is the author of Mother Country Fatherland.

A great thread guys!! Many thanks to Sven for joining us and sharing his information on the police organizations. As some of you may remember, I have one of those LG helmets also plus the Baden Landwehr Cavalry officer helme. Brian

My contriburtion to this old yet interesting thread... Same type of (French) PC as Brian's at the beginning of the thread; even taken at the exact same border crossing! I'll be sharing the helmet too soon hoping for more info. on it :)

Nice photo Brett!
Which brings us back to the difference in spikes I was enquiring about in my other thread... Does anyone know the difference?

Arrrrrgggggghhhh... This is extremely acute postcard envy Brett.....hmmmmmm RJR219 part of the Falkenhayn Mobilizations..... this is a great find! :thumb up: :thumb up: I got to tell you I am envious. The best one I have with this kind of helmet is Landwehr. You wouldn't consider allowing me to add this to the book would you? I bet I can do a lot with this and it is a fantastic example with those helmets. My weak addition. tell me what you think of the guy in the middle?

Ron I don't know. I should know but I don't you have to at least congratulate me for holding back and telling you that the difference was that one was fluted and one was not :-" :-"
