..His translation filled Remarque with deep gratitude:'I am enraptured!It is beautiful to the utmost degree!..Wheen had been a soldier,and that..and not his knowledge of German,was what made him 'so capable a translator'...the title would come last.Wheen started out with,'No News in the West'--a literal translation of an early German version.The first proofs bore the heading 'All quiet in the west',which Wheen crossed out,and replaced with 'All quiet on the Western Front'.This title stuck.Even when,in the mid-1990s,a British professor of German literature undertook a new translation,he did not dare touch the book's name..
