I recently purchased a complete (besides the wappen) M1895 that at somepoint someone had painted all the brass hardware grey. What would be the best way to remove paint from the brass without damaging the brass hardware.
Try gel type paint stripper. Brush it on with a tooth brush nice and thick. Let it soak for 10 minutes and you should see the paint wrinkle and lift. Use the same tooth brush and scrub the paint off. It will probably require more than one coat to get down in all the creases and fine details of the wappen. Rinse with water when you are satisfied. You will need to take the hardware off to do this or risk damaging the black finish on the leather. It will strip just like the hardware. The stripper shouldn’t affect the brass, but you may have to polish the brass to get an even tone. I suggest you try a small piece like a brad rivet first to test the outcome. For safety I suggest wearing rubber gloves and eye protection. Wait and see if you get some other suggestions.
