Hi Mark:

That thing is as phony as a three dollar bill. Felt with a leather welt surrounding the visors is a trademark of the fakes originating in the UK a few decades back. Talk about thrift, the faker even fashioned the chinstrap from the same felt as the korpus. The sad news is these are starting to look old now, and are vastly superior to the dross auctioned by 'military-bogus-uk' et al. I have a phony Tschako made like this. Brian has/had one too. Don't get burned.

This reproduction is not to be confused with a cloth covered Pickelhaube:

To view the Tschapka version of the fake felt, look at KHELMET 1-5 from the link below.

I was a little suspisous with the Stampings as that unit did not join the 9th Korps till Aprill 1915 . The plate was also a curiousity to me.
Thanks

Hi Mark:

Many of these old UK reproductions incorporate original Wappen, such as the Garde Adler on the Germania International Tschapka. It's amazing how a few original bits make the chimera more persuasive.

Chas.

I have a repop that was made as one ,but it has original parts onit ,the spine is a repop buthe wappen spike an other grey fittings are original.
Thanks for the advice
Mark

I still have my shako Chas. There were other versions of this helmet (the one on ebay at present) that had no leather trim around the rim but still came with felt chin strap and the IR22 wappen. I handled one which was presented to me for sale by a dealer years ago. The same guy also had the filz tschapkas for sale (3 of them). God only knows where they are now! Very realistic. Brian

Hmmmmmm $600 and 13 bids.

Several sources allude to filzhelme being used on the Serbian front. These allegedly had removable spikes and numbers on a scroll instead of a normal wappen. Trichters were never used and cockades were not there. There are supposedly shields for mountain machine-gun Abteilung 211 -- 250. There are also references to an R 116 scroll and an R 22 scroll. The author has a picture of two IR31 soldiers wearing these helmets. These helmets were supposedly not used with a bayonet spike attached and some had a Foreign Legion type neck guard. I have no problem with the existence of these helmets.[xvii] However, there does seem to be a problem with their use on the Serbian front. I do not understand how IR22 or IR31was supposed to be in Serbia . Nor reserve Regiment number 22. There is one source that talks about these number plates going to reserve infantry regiments and Ersatz infantry regiments. Unfortunately there is a lot of talk about reproductions and these helmets. Recently there was one that was listed in the Kube auction. So I do not think that they're all reproductions.
I think I have 4 pictures now. None look like the R22 scroll.

Joe it is stamped to the 9th Armee ,problem with this unit did not join that armee till April 1915 under the 117th Division .
