Hi,

I need your help. Can someone give me a good description of the Pickelhaube worn by the Enlisted Men of the R.I.R. Nr.94 in August 1914?

Thanks,

Richard

Richard,

You have a pretty wide choice. This 1st example is from October 1914. There are no crosses on these helmets and the guy on the back right has just a normal Prussian Wappen.

This picture from August of 1915 shows the normal Prussian Wappen with no sign of Saxe Weimar Eisenach or a cross. that guy in the center-right 2nd row has a felt helmet with a leather visor.

The lack of a cross was pretty standard for a RJR in 1914.

Thanks Joe.

So, we have several possibilities. If we consider the Pussian Wappen, is the color gilt or silver? And regarding the other choice, can we say that the RIR Nr.94 Wappen consists of a Sachsen crest (silver) framed by identical sprigs of laurel leaves over the center of the normal Prussian Wappen (gilt)?

Richard

Yes it would be all gilt. The basic eagle has 2 different mottos. The Prussian one is very standard for the King. But the complicated jr94 type is to the Fürst.

You can see the difference in the wappen below between Saxe Altenburg and Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. The differences in the type of leaves. They both have the same kind on the left as you are looking at it but the Saxe Altenburg has the same kind all the way around. The Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach example comes from Bruno's collection and is on the right.

Joe,

If I understand you correctly, the eagle and the Sachsen crest are gilt. And the Sachsen crest has two kind of leaves. But what do you mean when you say that the JR94 eagle type is to the Fürst? Do you mean the Fuerst Wappen type?
