Ring around the spike base

I already saw a great number of helmets with the disk placed on the side outside. Why that? Were some built mistakenly? Did they disassemble the helmet to clean and later they did gather the pieces mistakenly? Or what?

Hi All, in spite of Brian's photo, I would be inclined to believe that this was sent home, and the spike was removed for shipping and was reassembled by the receiver with out knowing the proper order of assembly.

Or, it was done after the war in the War Bonds drives. Or, a helmet is found on the battle field and a spike put on to get a 'complete" souvenir. Or any number of reasons, but I absolutely cannot see that any helmet would leave a Bekleidungsamt with the spike support on the outside. No way.

Has anyone noticed something odd about the visor trim?

Chas.
