Robert H. Haskell III Estate Helmets on Julia Auction

Here's a preview photo of a selection of pickelhaubes from the Estate Collection of Virginia Publisher Robert H. Haskell III, which will be available on the upcoming March of 2014 James D. Julia, Inc. Auctionhouse. Did anyone on here personally know, or know of the late Robert H. Haskell III ?

If they're real, they look to be in very nice condition. I can only wonder what else he had in his collection of pickelhaubes that will be in this auction as well.

Here's a link to the auction page where I found this photo posted below:

I don't subscribe to their catalogs, but I know that they handle militaria as well, and get some rare high-dollar U.S. Civil War items that go through their auction house.

James D. Julia, Inc. has claim to being the world's leading auctioneers of rare, high-grade, quality firearms. They had an over $18 Million Dollar sale this past October.

All the Best,

Alan

I am quite sure he called me once and we talked for about an hour. Sorry to hear he has passed. I think Randy pointed him into a lot of his helmets. He bought one from Kube that I could kick myself for. Never seen another one like it. Is the selection online anywhere? I would actually go for that one if it was available.

Hi Joe,

This next upcoming James D. Julia Inc. auction will not be held until March 10, 11, 12 of 2014.

Looks like their website states that the Haskell estate items will be auctioned in their 2nd Auction Session, held on March 11th. From what I can see, they are still accepting consignment items up until January 16th, 2014, for the 3-day auction session. Here's a link: http://jamesdjulia.com/firearms.asp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The catalog and any further previews of Haskell's pickelhaubes are not available for viewing from them as of my posting today, other than the 1-photo I have already posted. Sorry, I wish that I could tell you more. I'll have to keep watching their website. I hope that you can acquire the pickelhaube you mention in your posting. :)

All the Best,

Alan

I have talked to auction house, many more helmets, but will not be any pictures until closer to the auction.

Some high end stuff, I am sure prices will be high plus buyers commission.

How unfortunate he passed away.

Here is a little on Mr. Haskell.

I just returned from Maine to help the James Julia Auction house identify and classify the Robert Haskell Collection. The auction house has also reached out to other top collectors for their input. There were about 150 helmets in the grouping. Bob Haskell was the consummate collector. He schooled himself in the knowledge of his collecting goals and sought out advice from the best known collectors and dealers in the field. Bob was very demanding and insisted on authenticity and the finest quality in everything he purchased. He dealt with well known European dealers such as Jan Kube, Hermann Historica, Helmut Weitze, and Sergio Semino. In the United States he worked with collector/dealers like Walter Hartmann, Steven Wolfe, James Julia, Mohawk Arms and with AGE of KINGS (Remy Schaal and I). He was constantly looking for rare and valuable helmets. He studied the collecting field and decided on a “target” for his next acquisition. In 2003 he sent out a message to his contact group that he was seeking the extremely rare Hessen 117th 9th Company officers helmet. He got two responses, one from Europe and the other from the US. He purchased both! He divided the collection into 2 parts. The rare officer helmets resided at his home while he sought out WWI era field helmets for his farm retreat. He enjoyed the history and the grandeur of the era prior to World War I.
Most of the helmets are absolutely wonderful and extremely rare. Most are in near mint condition. The collection includes Braunschweig Deaths Head and Running Horse officers. Generals from Hessen, Bavaria, Wurttemberg, Prussia, Saxony, Meckelnburg Schwerin and Prussia. Two (count them) Hessen 117 9C officers helmets. Hessen pre and post 1897 115 LGIR officer helmets. Mecklenburg Strelitz Fusiler and Artillery. Rare Duchy officers. Hannoverian and Nassau 87 & 88 officers. The list goes on and on. There are also a large number of WWI era field gray and ersatz helmets. These are of mixed condition and originality. There are also a couple of mixed up parts pieces that I identified as such.
I was able to examine each helmet individually but I was not allowed to take them apart. I feel that most of them were original and outstanding. The auction house will use my evaluation and that of their other evaluators to prepare the catalog. Once the catalog is out, I will gladly share my personal notes on any helmets of interest. I will be an auction to remember.

Hi Randy, Thanks for the synopsis. Any particularly great steel helmets in this lot? I might have to go to Maine to have a look-see.

Cheers,

Mark D.

Wow...reminds me of the Hogg collection that went up for sale in CA years ago Butterfield & Butterfield were the auctioneers. I bought 4 helmets and I know Randy got some also. There is going to be swarm of collectors going for this one.

Tony sent me a link to the new pics of this collection, some exceptionally rare pieces. I also heard that the helmes shown in grouped pictures of filz helmes and other M15's are going to be sold as "lots"??? Is this true? This does not make sense to me.

Online Catalog is Up & Running.

They switched the session the helmets are in to the 3rd Session, starting with # 3256

Here's a link to session #3: http://jamesdjulia.com/auction/gun-archive-auction-position-push/?session=3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I wish everyone Good Luck in their pursuit!

Best Regards,

Alan

Hey Guys;
I just talked to Wes Dillon at the James Julia Auction house. He is sending a bunch of catalogs to me while I am at the SOS. They sell for $30 but he says it will be a reduced price for the show. I will let you know when I get them at the show. Anyone who wants one come by my table.
