Save the Locust Valley Gun! - German 77mm C96Na Artillery

Excellent! I won't be able to be there myself, so I'm looking forward to seeing photos.

Thanks, Mark D.

Hi all,

Appropriately enough, the cannon will be rededicated on November 11th at 11 am. I intend to be there and will post photos here.

Thanks,

Nicely restored!

As far as other derelict pieces around, the best thing for them (if nobody local cares about them) is for a private collector to get them. As far as unpapered pieces go, I'd have to ask about that type of thing with a curator friend of mine. My thought is, that if it's taken for a restoration and a museum is named in one's will as the ultimate recipient, then it may be easy to procure such a piece, without worrying that the ATF is going to send an M60 tank into your house. If you're looking to acquire, restore, then sell, I'd imagine it would be a can of worms. If I remember, I'll ask my friend. He used to curate the Patton Museum... and he'll just assume I found something for my collection, rather than anything on this site.

Hi Danie,

Thanks for posting the photos. I wasn't able to attend, but my mother was there (she lives in Locust Valley) and promised to send pictures. She said there was supposed to be an exhibit of relics and I was curious to see what they had put on display.

When I was a youngster, just getting into militaria collecting, the LV library had a Prussian EM uhlan helmet in storage. I wonder if it is still there!

My mother said that the cannon was sent somewhere south (Maryland?) for restoration. I'd be interested to know if the restoration was historically accurate.

Hi Mark,

I have other pics I will be putting up soon. It was well attended, and I had the pleasure of meeting the head of the Matinecock Neighborhood Association, who was behind the restoration effort.

In terms of artifacts, it was mostly vintage flags and newspaper clippings, though some members fo the Locust Valley Historical Society were dressed in authentic WWI doughboy and Red Cross kit.

Re: your question as to whether it was restored to spec, I wouldn;t have the foggiest idea. I gather it has been through a few restorations in the last 90+ years, and it looked good to me, though I did not get the chance to inspect the cannon up close. I can email my contact at the library to try and connect with the MNA and see if they can provide specifics on who did the restoration work.
