Hello,

Here is a recently acquired Saxon Wartime Steel Belt Buckle. I think the maker mark of "RTD" stands for Robert Tummler of Dobeln in Saxony.

This is the first example of a Saxon Belt Buckle by this maker that I have ever seen. It is also the first Imperial German buckle with this style of catch that I have ever seen.

The leather tab is nicely marked: "R. Max Phillipp, Niederschlema I Erzg., 1916"

I look forward to your comments.

All the Best,

Alan

Thanks Joe and Larry!

He was also in the list of buckle makers in Nash's book on buckles, and I made a guess that he might have been the manufacturer of this buckle.

Joe: here's the link where I found the neat photo when I was doing some research on Robert Tummler: http://www.europeana.eu/portal/record/08547/C57963C80ED3BB11B51087C60335DF15BA3473DA.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Apparently the negative is in the collection of the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Leipzig. I wonder what other photos they might have of any products his large factory produced. Apparently at one time there were over 1,000 employees working for him.

All the Best,

Alan

Here's a link to a nice lithographic image of the large factory, and an article on Robert Tummler of Dobeln:
