Anyhew, the mother-of-all helmets, a $30k+ haube starting at $450 could be the deal of the century...

That would indeed be a very nice deal but somehow I don't trust it. Its probably quite similar to all these fake garde du corpse helmets that are on ebay all the time.

Well, at least this second seller is honest... But one must admit the 1st specimen looks nicer/closer to the original--not that I have one to compare with (I wish!!) but I mean when benchmarked with photos from reputable auction houses...

These replicas are nice and fun, but pale in comparison to the real thing. For example, you'll notice the nice crisp corners of the stepped visor in the photo Ron posted of the real helmet. You don't see that on the replicas. Also, the curve of the neck guard trim on the original is much more graceful on this model of helmet than on the replica. The one you posted originally, Ron, is an obvious fake from the helmet itself to the farcical description. I'd be willing to bet that thing is well under ten years old.

I thought the helmet looked pretty good, until I noticed the rear feet of the lion aren't even touching the helment, the base sticks out into the air just a little bit. If you look at the helmet Ron posted the lion is firmly planted on the helmet.

Guys,

C'mon, there are signs all over the place that the one on ebay is a fake. An officer's helmet of this type will usually have a one piece neck guard with the plates stamped in and lined with velvet, rather than thin, fake leather. The cockades are all wrong in size, and the chin strap too short. The trim is too thick and the step on the visor is weak as are the sides where it should be squared rather than rounded. Tombak also ages to a brown rather than gold and the metal on this appears to be about eighteen gage, which is WAY too thick for an officer's helmet. This is one clutzy, clumsy, graceless looking replica and being sold as a 'maybe' original?
No returns of a fake? No way.

Ron

Here is a link showing a replica (stated as such), which is identical to the helmet originally posted here (right down to the shrunken leather under the neck guard). They're from the same manufacturer and share all of the same traits.
