Saxon helmet--apparently unissued

Looks like a nice unissued to me too... I looked at the repro shops and they usually have black leather liners in theirs. Strange that they took such good care of it (obviously brought back by a vet or tourist, not one of those in the BIG pile or pyramid of helmets in NYC), but it's missing the cockades and chin strap. Not that it really matters, just kind of strange. Maybe the kids played with it. :P

Hi Guys,

I won this helmet on eBay, and will shoot better pics of it after I receive it. Yes, I paid through the nose for it, but realize they don't come any better than this one. I hope there will be no disappointments with the condition of it when I receive it, as the seller shot pretty decent detailed photos. The fittings still have that mint, unissued condition "powder coated" lighter gray finish on all the trim, which will eventually turn darker color.

I have a mint Saxon style National Kokarde for it already, but will need to find a mint Saxon Kokarde for it, as well as a very nice chinstrap w/gray metal trim to finish the piece off.

I have a Baden e.m. w/no issue markings in it as well, in almost as nice as condition as this one, apparently unworn & probably unissued also, like this one. When I acquired it about 12-years ago, it had this same color "powder" light gray finish on the metal, and it darkened over the years since I've had it. Probably from exposure to the air.

All the Best,

Alan

Alan,

Apologies for making you pay through the nose, but I also liked the helmet! Good purchase, they aren't making any more mint M15 pickelhaubes.

Mike

Excuse my ignorance but I see this is an opportune moment to enquire about what is the going rate for a good 'haube on the open market.

I would have thought $1150 or thereabouts was a fair price to pay - or is it excessive? In which case I can stop saving.

Hi Mike & Brett,

Not a problem Mike. Yes, it does look very nice, and as you say: "they aren't making any more mint M15 pickelhaubes".

Considering that, I think it was a fair price for what the winning bid was. I was actually a bit suprised that it didn't go for more. Where am I going to find one this nice again? We all hope/wish to get something for as cheap as possible, (myself included) and with the worldwide eBay format, there's usually no bargain basement prices to be had.

As a side note, the weakness of the dollar versus the Euro, and the strength of various other world currencies makes it tough for US buyers to compete on eBay USA against bidders who have a stronger currency than our old Dollar.

To answer Brett's question: Normally a person can acquire a very nice M15 Prussian e.m., complete, for about $750-$850 or so. That is if you can find one in real nice condition. There's a lot of them out there in average/so-so condition. I sold a very nice complete Prussian one 2-years ago at the S.O.S. for a mere $600.

All the Best,

Alan

Ahhhh I remember the days of the near mint $50 M15 (with chin straps and cockades!) and I'm sure some members remember them cheaper.

Another question to ask is, do I NEED it to be mint? During my collecting time, I've collected all kinds of helmets, steels, tanker, civilian... and have several that are mint / unissued. Sometimes the ones that have been issued, used, have some history are more interesting in many ways.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with mint helmets :D
