If the Russians caught someone, they were likely sent to a penal camp or Siberia. These items were thrown away. During the GDR era, military items were sought after by the Stasi and sold to the West via Schalk Kolotkowski. Large collections were confiscated under the guise of tax evasion. After the fall of the Wall, Dutch peddlers talked people out of the rest for very little money. the small remainder that is still there is firmly in the hands of collectors ;-)
There were West German dealers who rented a hotel after the fall of the Wall and made purchases there. I know of a case from Sigmar near Chemnitz. The dealer had piles of uniforms in the hotel lobby and crates of medals and awards. For 100 DM, you could get almost anything. You could clear out the attics for that. After the fall of the Wall, there was a gold rush atmosphere.
