Isn't this one of the fakes from the 1970s, but with metal trim on the visor?

An awful fake of course. Even the description is wrong ("...a correct Reich cockade...")...
But the price tells it all: if "Der Rittmeister" had a genuine one for sale I suppose it would be advertised at at least $ 5000,00...

I actually read the description… He should buy some books.
Here the much discussed Saxon serrated cockade. So many thoughts about these but we have yet to give these thumbs down.

Brad,

We are actually done with the manuscript for Halen. Now that I am footloose and fancy free I probably will turn my attention to updating fixing my website. How would you like to contribute a bunch of pictures of fakes? We can fix the fakes article which gets a lot of hits.

I don't really know – sort of the exposure of what collectors should look for – you have a pretty good if not the best collection of fakes for reference so I thought a bunch of pictures for other collectors might be useful.

I have to ask: is Der Rittmeister known as a reputable dealer? Having browsed the website this morning, they certainly have some difficult to find items. But they are also some of the more likely-to-be-faked items as they are so pricey/rare.

Curious on the overall consensus here, as I recently sold a house and there are certainly some of my wishlist items for sale on Der Rittmeister! I have an arrangement with my better half that I can purchase one expensive pickelhaube from the house proceeds - I want to make the most of this opportunity!

Do not pay his prices IMHO. Contact age of kings and explain what you might be looking for. Try stewart or AGM for further ideas.

Thanks Max – I got to get to this. There are two arguments one that collectors should be exposed to what is bad. It's an education thing. The other argument is that if you show the fakers what you are looking at they will make better fakes. I guess I'm always optimistic and believe in the former but there are certainly some disingenuous people out there. We have all been burned and I think this might be a way to help people see the problems. There certainly are no shortage of fakes. :-k

Here's one (ok, it's not a Tschapka) that's made by the same faker as the 5th one Pickelmax is showing. The helmet is in one of the displays of the museum in Zonnebeke... They should pay more attention to what they are showing IMO...
