There are many false copies of the Saxon wappen out there, they often (almost always) lack detail,
the first thing to go is the jewelry on the crown.

Can you get a refund on your purchase, no matter how little the helmet cost you? Whoever the seller is, they outright Lied to You. That's just being a flagrant Crook in my opinion. :thumbsdown: :ANGRY: It always ticks me off to see a new collector get burned by a crook or liar...

I believe the helmet is a newer made leather body that has been artificially aged to make the helmet look old.

The frontplate is a modern made cast copy. The detail is very weak and does not look anything like the crisp details on Ed's photo.

Chinstrap is a modern repro (as the seller had admitted to you).

The brass visor fastener brads are the size of brads for the spike base. In other words they are incorrect to be used on the visor trim.

My guess would be that the spike and backspine are new made parts as well, even without seeing better photos from you to show close up details on those parts.

I'm truly sorry to be the bearer of bad news for you on this helmet.....

Agreed 100%. This hobby can be tough on new (and even experienced) collectors. My first Pick was one I purchased out of Shotgun News for $50 (to me a LOT for a helmet at that time, when an M1916 Stahlhelm was around $20. It was an absolute piece of crap, but I was so in love with it that I cleaned it up and displayed it (I still have it under an uberzug being displayed). You can imagine the thrill I had when I purchased my first good example... a standard Prussian M98 enlisted infantry helmet that was 100% original.

Study original wappen photos and such. An easy, dead give-away on this one is the liner. Take a look at the originals here and you'll see the difference. SOMETIMES you'll see a replaced liner of this type on an original, but not often at all. Return it, get your money back if you can, otherwise, you have a nice helmet to play with at parties and such, because it has no real value beyond fun.

Hang in there, don't be discouraged or feel foolish, we've all been there in one form or another.

Thanks for the encouraging help. I thought there was something fishy, came from seller (ocha3 on Ebay, they are scammers so stay away from this seller name) but they couldn't sell it so I purchased it from them directly. They claimed it came from an estate of a Veteran. I tried to get my money back but they refused and said sale was final. Live and learn on my part. I have since learned much from fellow members here and appreciate it very much.

Yeah, if a seller wants to sell you something 'away from ebay', that's a red flag. On the other hand, I bought a nice Swedish Life Guards (new) Pickelhaube from a buyer who thought it was a fire helmet as the seller described it. Nice inexpensive deal there!

I'm listing this on Ebay as partial original parts and reproduction. Gonna try and get something for it and look for an original Saxon now that I have an idea of what to look for. I want to thank all who have been helpful.
 
That is a $75 lesson and it could have been a lot worse. You got rid of it. Notice too how puffy the liner is around the rim of the shell? Originals are tight because they have been pulled down on a head and drenched in sweat many times. These mistakes are all part of the learning curve in collecting these things.
