Did they ever use letters on the scrolls? I wonder what photoshop can do with that. Is it okay to download and play with that zoomed in shot?

Ron,

Of course you can download and zoom in on anything you want. There is no separate photographic evidence that I have found of using letters. The shoulder strap on this guy is different yet again. I really need to redo this article and I have like 3 things to put into it–priorities!

You mean something like.. Did you ever hear the German term "ABC-Schütze"? That is a first grader who is just learning the alphabet.

Couldn't figure anything new out in photoshop... I tried different things like the 'magic wand', various formatting, visual effects etc... Oh well, it was fun.

Well, still doesn't look like a number to me. Could be a representation of a gothic J or I. Also, judging from his boots and equipment couldn't this be a mountain troop?

Yes, they are. If you look through the article you will see they are identified as GMGA.

They had this frenzy for using upside-down "2"s and "7"s. Maybe a number "7" turned around?
