I had not noticed before, but the Bekeidungs Ampt marking is BA 1X, Now that is not a familiar BA marking, but I think it could stand for 1 X beaver, the lowest quality of felt hat that you can buy. Oddly enough, that quality of felt hat normally had a boarder stitched to its brim because the felt is such poor quality.

So are you guys saying this one could be original?
I thought that the leather trim was reason enough to disqualify it?

He's making a joke about the traditional use of "X" in felt hat labels...a 1X felt hat would be so flimsy that it would have a border sewn on for strengthening it. The "BA 1X" is a bogus stamping that comically and coincidentally brings to mind low-quality felt hats. :)

The helmet is a fake.

Just like the toy cowboy hats that come with the cap guns are fake too, 'sept they are made out of plastic now, oddly enough, just like some of the new fake helmets.

Ouch, I just got the burn, jokes aren't funny when they have to be explained:)

Gustaf, I think some understood it, but I'm glad it was explained (.... a Ron thing?.... )! It IS rather funny and it's nice to add the 'IX' to our lexicon of terms regarding haberdashery! :)

Once a fake, always a fake! It is not even a real felt hat, so the 1X marking is fake too.

No bids yet. Maybe collectors are finally realizing that these aren't period helmets.

Uh-oh...someone plunked down the opening bid. Poor sucker. #-o

It occurred to me that this is such an iconic fake, that eventually, it will be collectable as well, as an example, I have a British 10 pound note from 1934 that is fake, but it is an important part of history, and no collection of banknotes is complete without a Bernhard counterfeit.

That's it! I'm bidding. oh... wait... it's $299, not $2.99. My bad. Oh well, maybe for the next one.

The seller says this of the helmet:

I BOUGHT THIS HELMET SOME 15 YEARS AGO FROM A MAJOR INTERNATIONAL MILITARIA DEALER HERE IN NEW YORK. I WAS ADVISED THAT THIS HELMET CAME IN A TRADE (ALONG WITH SOME OTHER HELMETS/HATS) FOR SOME PERIOD SWORDS FROM A MUSEUM IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC. I HAVE NO REASON TO DOUBT THAT PROVENANCE. CONCURRENTLY, SOME ONE SENT ME AN EMAIL SHOWING A SIMILAR STAMP TO THAT WHICH IS INSIDE THE HAT CLAIMING THAT IT WAS IN A REPRODUCTION HELMET???? STAMPS ARE EASY TO REPRODUCE...HATS ARE NOT. THE HAT APPEARS TO ME TO BE APPROPRIATELY AGED WITH CORRECT PERIOD PATINA. THERE ARE MORE THEN A FEW BIDDERS WHO ARE LOOKING AT THIS HELMET. MY GUESS IS THAT THEY CONSIDER IT TO BE GENUINE. "MUSEUM GRADE" MEANS TO ME, THAT IT HAS FEW FLAWS AND REPRESENTS A HIGHER LEVEL OF PRESERVATION. AS NOTED IN ALL MY AUCTIONS, IF IN DOUBT, PLEASE DO NOT BID.

](*,)

He May be honest, and believe what he has written, these fakes do look old and have fooled many of us in the past. although the stamp in this one should really be a tell, just as the Enfield stamps on the Afghan reproductions are, when an sideways Z is used for an N.

8 bids only, which is not much if it was the real deal. It therefore seems to me that most potential buyers know that it is a fake, which may point towards a better informed collectors community :D

Regards,

Edwin
