I think it’s possible to improve the condition, but it won’t look perfect. Wojtek here in our forum does an incredibly valuable job here. You should ask him for his assessment.

I would have the soldering done by a professional, but to clean the metal you could do the following:

• Mix fine chalk (the material used for stucco) and alcohol into a paste.
• Carefully clean the metal parts, not too firmly, using a Q-tip and this paste.
• After the alcohol has evaporated, the chalk can be carefully brushed off with a soft brush, leaving no residue.
