Semper Talis Pickelhaube

Hi. I'm new to the forum. Recently acquired this pickelhaube. I have looked around for similar haubes, but this particular one is sparsely posted. It should be a 1.st garde-regiment zu fuss. Wappen displays great detail on reverse. Spike screws off. Leather band under chinscales looks intact and legit. I have not dared disassembling other parts. Helmet has been glued together here and there as the stitching has decayed over the years.

Anyone recognise the Cypher or can atleast make out the letters? Looks like there used to be a crown above it. Opinions are welcomed.

Beautiful and rare old piece, excellent! The quality of the fittings, the thickness of the raised bandeau and the detail of the wappen all scream quality and expense. No wonder we see, a cypher attached to the liner. Whoever wore this, had money to spend on a high quality helmet and obviously to be an officer in this Regt you were "nobility". Thanks for posting, and welcome to the forum.

Great helmet
Looks 100 % to me
I think I see 2 holes in the silk liner
above the cypher . I will bet you there was a crown
there at one time .
Brian is correct , the white inside is for the "higher ups "
I have trouble figuring out those old Germen Gothic letters
If someone could tell us the letter
maybe we could find some names of possible officers
in the Rang List .

Final thing I will say
is that if you want problems with leather and body work
Brian is the man to do it
You have a helmet that most everyone wants
so you might want to bring it back to as close
as it once was

Here is one of my 1 G R zu Fuss helmets .
This for the Batls . that did not take the Semper Talis banner
This was the helmet of one of Kaiser Wilhelm's sons
August Wilhelm .
I post it to show that IMO the interior is
of the same white quality and has the metal cypher with crown
above it . These photos were taken at the show where I bought
the helmet . I had tracked it some years .
I know when and where it first sold .
Then the collector who owned it passed away at an early age .
A collector friend of mine sold the helmet for his widow .

Notice how both helmets have the correct
spike . Not only are they the correct fluted spike
but correctly , these spikes have a lip
where they meet the base and do not go all the way
down as most spikes do .
The only difference I notice with the helmet
of johnconner is that the base is not secured
with stars , but appear to be some type of smooth
round studs .
Feedback , please .

Steve

Here is my Semper Talis officer and my enlisted man
Over the years far fewer enlisted helmets
with the Semper Tails banner as opposed to the
officers helmets
Both are hard to find IMO

Thanks for the comments and the pictures to compare. Beautiful helmet Steve! The spike does indeed have a lip. And you are correct about the two small holes above the cypher.

Regarding the screws they seem slightly flatter than on other helmets. Unfortunately they have been soldered crudely on the inside as they are missing the nuts. I cannot take them out to inspect them without a replacement. They do maintain the same patina as the helmet. The screw fixing the bandau has a brass nut with vertigris.

If that is the only thing about the helmet
Not to worry
You have a rare helmet
and a rare find
I saw one go for 8000 Euro plus 23 % commission
not long ago

Beautiful helmet! My guess that the gothic letter in the liner is a "N"
As with Steve's helmet, (based on the silhouette in the liner), it looks like it may have been the same type of crown. That would make it perhaps a Fürst (Prince), or possibly Herzog (Duke).

Here is a photo of a liner on one of my helmets...the nine tines with pearls indicates the owner was a Graf (Count). If it had seven, then it would be a Freiherr (Baron)

Welcome aboard, and thanks for sharing!

Dennis ;
Nice photo
It shows the crown and cypher
are sewn into the silk liner
nice helmet
I assume it is one of your J z P R Officers helmets ?
Which one ?

Steve

Beautiful and very rare helmet :bravo:

Many years ago my father owned one with the parade plume.

Regarding the cream coloured leather sweatband, I have only seen that once before, years ago when I was given a flugeladjuntant officer haube to work on. It was exactly like this helme but no bandeau and unfortunately an OR Garde stern instead of the proper officer style. I know I took pics and will try to find them. There was no cypher on the silk. Again, a great helmet and very rare.

Great helmet !

BTW Age of Kings Militaria has just sold a Baden Infantry officer "nobility" helmet. Same cream coloured liner and cypher. The pics are still up on their web site. This one has the post war perforated sweatband. Check it out.

It shows the crown and cypher are sewn into the silk liner
nice helmet. I assume it is one of your J z P R Officers helmets ?
Which one ?

Steve, you are correct. This is in the liner of my JzPf Officers Interim helm
