Thought you'd like to look.

Joe and Phillippe, could you tell us what there is in particular about these markings that you both find suspect? For instance, is it the style of font for the lettering and numerals, the spacing, faulty abbreviations, or what? I think that a number of collectors would be taken in by these stamps.

Sincerely, Bob

Bob,

My primary concern is the font. I really do not want to get into the details of the giveaway signs but it is really clear if you just look at the fonts. That can most easily be seen in numbers. So I guess one might be a good tool is to make a collection of what you believe are good numbers. Then you can use this to compare against questionable numbers. Obviously there is no substitute for handling the item and getting a "feel for it". We have a listing of markings that I believe are good to go. Is located at http://www.pickelhauben.net/articles/Kammer_Marks.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
there are two other listings in other articles that you can find attached near there. there is yet another article @ http://www.pickelhauben.net/articles/Fakes.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; that shows you one example of a font difference. A serious problem is that the fakers check this forum constantly. You would not believe some of the emails I have gotten from as far away as Pakistan. Getting to know what "looks right" is a semi-artform and anything I call can easily be wrong. I would bet that I am right most of the time.

the other warning sign on this example is just a huge number of marks. everything and his brother is there. It sounds alarm bells. They are also very very clear. Much of the stuff we struggle with is just that a struggle. I hope that gives you some indication if you need more just say so. That is the purpose of this sharing. However, my wife is calling. I have to stop stalling. :cry:

IMHO, those markings are looking too "new", especially those on the back visor...The ink is too shiny and too "perfect"....All the markings have been stamped very straight and very clean next or uppon each other...Never saw that...It looks like a "stamp exhibition"... Obviously someone wanted to do the stamping job too perfect.
At last but not least, I personally never saw the abreviation "Komp." for Companie, but "C." or "K."...

Philippe

Thanks for your replies, Joe and Phillip. I also saw one from Roy last night. Then it went poof (...). What happened?
Bob

Hello gents,
There is absolutely no reason to put fake stamps in that Tschako.
The silver M91 posts and the silver trichter indicate that it is Flieger and nothing else.
A "Battalion" mark is correct with a 1913 date, as the FA/FEA were not raised until wartime.
Absolutely authentic IMO and the stamps should be added to the database.
Roy

I am also with Roy. In addition to Flieger Bataillons 1 through 4, this pattern shako with silver side lugs and black busch was also worn by Luftschiffer Bataillons 1 & 2 and the 1st Telegraphen Bataillon.

There you go Bob. Different opinions on the same object. Sharing and collecting ultimately each of us has to make a call. Sometimes you're right sometimes you're wrong but the more you know the better it is! By the way I like the maker's Mark. :-P
