I found them in a few cardboard boxes...all dusty...they must have been there for decades. I dusted them with a soft shaving brush...yes I was wearing white cotton gloves.... 8-)
After some two months in the Barracks museum they were boxed up again and returned to the attic of the townhall of Nieuwpoort at the North Sea coast. Sad...
Joe...Before you ask... I hope to contact them soon to take the pictures of the liners and markings/stamper I forgot. I know they are not in great shape.
I love the smell of old leather and brass in the morning... :greentank:

Do you have more information on the background of these helmets? Were they, for example, part of an old collection, or were some of them acuired during ww1 as trophies by Belgian troops?

Regards,

Edwin

Hello Francis!
Nice stuff there, especially that Belgian medieval-looking WW1 trial helmet and even more that East Asian Tropenhelm which on top has its chinstrap intact! =P~

Oh yes ! The "Elisabeth helmet" must be worth a fortune !
Fine Tropenhelm with perfect liner !

Francis thank you! :thumb up: :thumb up: :thumb up: I do have to ask for permission to use the retailer Mark or tag that you already have. Nice picture I do not think it is on the list. Thanks for thinking of us! God bless.

There is nothing better than such an attic freshness!! What a pity that we can not smell through our screens!! GREAT!!!
Thank you for sharing!

They plan a brandnew Memorial Museum in Nieuwpoort to commemorate 1914-1918. Let's hope they display some of them.
Nieuwpoort was one of the three "Frontsteden"; the "Front Towns" that were totaly destroyed during the war. Along with Diksmuide and Ieper (Ypres).

Rgds,
Francis

SWEEEEEEET!!!! :)

Let's hope they display ALL of them. If not, then perhaps a collector should care for them (I wonder if we can find one with a name that starts with 'F'). You can always call it a 'loan' that they can recall at any time and emphasize that your care is better than being in an attic box. A sort of 'benefactor' for their care and preservation.

What a pile.....wow...thanks for sharing them Francis. I love those early pattern haubes, hopefully some of them are unit marked.. :bravo: I wonder how the 1860 & 1867 pattern helmets came to be in this collection, were they acquired during WWI do you think?

You're right !
Possibly an old collection that was presented decades ago...
Correct: some sturdy old pieces among them !
Rgds,
Francis

I think you should go to your town council and explain that you'd like to be the unofficial (or official for that matter) curator of the collection, then mention that displaying them (ON LOAN) in your home is better than letting them suffer the changes in temp / humidity / dust in the attic. Stress that the collection still belongs to the city (until such time as they want to dispose of it) and that they can access it at any time for displays, their museum and so forth. You care about the preservation of the collection, not any financial gain or profit and will NOT sell any, as they don't belong to you, but the people of the city.

... and then you sell the Imperial Tropenhelm to me for $250 and we never speak about this to anyone =P~ :-"

Ron & Ronny,
Sure ! 8-) Great idea.
Yes, this Tropenhelm is a real beauty !
Rgds,
Francis

Personally, I like the Artillery helmet with the BIG leather cockade or the 'spineless' (can't remember the model 1856???) Infantry.
