This is the first pickelhaube I ever bought. I got it 34 years ago at a military show. Always wanted to install the front brim so I found one that fit.

Not to bad. Can anyone tell me if it’s unusual that the spike and base are aluminum and the eagle and rear spine are steel. Also, would the chin strap have aluminum or steel fittings?

Nice job, it looks great with the trim put back on. I have never heard of an aluminum spike and base but there are all kinds of anomalies with these helmets. The chin strap should have grey steel fitting to match the spine and eagle. This is a model 1915 helmet and usually all fittings are grey steel like you helmet plate.

This spike came in a box of junk well over 25 years ago and I dismissed it as fake, until three dealers saw it and expressed interest - without telling me just why. Looking at it again it is remarkably well made of 'spun' aluminium, three piece construction swaged together, 5 vent holes, non removable tip, 77mm diam. base plate, total height 86mm and, of course, as light as a feather. The colour is patinated to a really good match to the field gray of M15's and I now wonder if it was part of some kind of private purchase lightweight M15? IF it is a fake someone went to great lengths to do a very good job of it.

Cool. Mine is also spun, but it is a removable type. It is pretty much identical to the steel version, but it is obviously super light and does not rust. Although there was some small amount of aluminum oxidation on one of the split pins.

You learn something every day in this hobby.
I have some officer's with a aluminum support plate but never heard of an EM spike !

Don't get me wrong, even after owning this for a long time I'm still suspicious of its being a fake, never having seen another. And surely aluminium was a metal in great shortage during the war, so why use it for something so trivial as an EM helmet?

I don't believe this to be fake despite being made from aluminum. The shape seems to be perfect for an original fixed M15 style. All the modern fakes (India) I have seen are easily detected because they just don't match up. "Fixed" M15 style spikes have also been discussed here previously, I have one on My Wurtt. M15 helmet. Just my opinion.

Thanks Brian, I am pleasantly surprised that you think it a better bet than I had always thought. But then I have never owned an M15 to compare to. (sad )

That is fascinating! I have never heard of this on an M1915 helmet either. Something to keep an eye out for.
