"Soldatenheim" - unknown location.

Hello,

That's Attigny, in Ardennes, France, north of "Champagnefront", between Vouziers and Rethel.

name : Dôme de Charlemagne"

I love these past present comparisons. Here is one:

First photo is titled (in German) Formation of German Landsturm into Liege. Note the Hotel at right.

And today we have the Best Western Univers Hotel, 116 Rue Des Guillemins, Liege, Belium. (thanks Wooway!).

Congratulations IR92!! Impressive.
I have a full photo album of IR92 stationed in a French village; I had posted a few on the forum but unfortunately nobody could identify the place...

Hi IR92,
In response to your message, the post was titled "BAX" and appeared in June 2010 under "Period Photographs". At that time you had made a comment about Perthes-les-Hurlus...
Thank you if you can help.

Great pics everyone. Getting back to the first one though, I think we have an excellent example of French entrepreneurs who are quite willing to change their signs in order cater to the needs of the new occupation forces....Gothic script included.

Nice job George. I don't know anyone who doesn't enjoy those "then and now" pictures.

Feldpost 49

The writer made a real mess of this one.

Schampanie should be Champagne, because Attigny belonged to the Champagne front. Stübl is a bavarian word for Stube, a cosy restaurant or a café or a beerpub.

It's a good example of Feldpost at the end of the war. In 1917 they stopped using unit markings in postage stamps for secrecy reasons.

Hello,
“an excellent example of French entrepreneurs who are quite willing to change their signs in order cater to the needs of the new occupation forces....

Sorry, I do not think so…
On that photo, there are no traders or entrepreneurs more, and they did not paint gothic themselves !

The occupants requisitioned the shoppings, for rest of the front soldiers, and so “lingerie” (underwear) shop became the “soldatenheim” (soldiers home),
“A la Parisienne” (cloths of silk) became “Lesehalle” (reading hall) ,
Schreibzimmer is the writing room. etc…

“Schampanie should be Champagne” : Sure he writes like Bayern !
stamp is “ 2. Kompagnie”. of Bayerisch Armierungs Bataillon 10.
