The remains of at least 15 soldiers, with pieces of equipment and personal belongings, have just been discovered on the site of Fleury-devant-Douaumont, a village in the middle of the Verdun battlefield that was annihilated in 1916.

Here you go:
Bones belonging to soldiers ("Poilus") of the Great War have been found in Meuse (the name of this part of France). Since yesterday, a search carried out at Fleury-sous-Douaumont allowed to recover the remains of 15 soldiers, according to several sources.
German tourists spotted some of the bones last Tuesday and alerted authorities.
Since yesterday, police officers from Verdun searched several square meters and found the remains of at least 15 soldiers. Personal belongings such as coins, cigarette lighters and notebooks, in good condition, were also found.
These soldiers are estimated to have been killed between March 28th and April 15th, during the battle for the Caillette ravine and Vaux pond.
Descendants of these soldiers will be tentatively identified.

Thank you p-car. Was thee any mention of a recent rain or some such that would have exposed the bones to tourists?

I heard it has been basically raining non-stop in France for the past 3 months or so...
Wondering how notebooks "in good condition" may have been retrieved....
