It may have old metal bits, but the body might be new....

hi, i too looked at this :) & came to the same conclusion :( , repro body, looks like the U.K. ( i am ashamed to say! :-? ) copies, with the faked '1917. stamp & the leather trim around the base of the helm, although the parts look to be right. I dismissed this one, & i will look elswhere. i am learning! :D

Hi Steve and Brad: Definately stay away from this one. There is no doubt that it is bogus. The leather trim on the visors is a dead give away. Chas had one of these, a Sxon with brass fittings I believe and I had a shako with Prussian M15 wappen and fittings. We know that they were reproduced in England during the 70's. They are very good fakes except for the liners and leather trim. There are no original pictures which show this type of leather trimmed helmet being worn. Brian

And, I'm sorry to report I still have the bloody thing. Sometimes, I wish I had no conscience. I tried selling the turkey as a reproduction and generated zero interest.

Had I spun some ridiculous yarn, claiming it was a rare Dachboden find, it would have been gone long ago.

Chas.

Brian,
May I respectfully disagree? I came through a book published in France that describes the Alsace campaign and is illustrated with numerous excellent pictures. One of those, which is very crisp, shows piles of used spike helmets on the verge of being repaired or recycled, among which I could clearly see (to my big surprise since I thought as you do that these never existed at that time) felt helmets with a leather rim...
I am still convinced that the saxon helmet for sale on ebay is an ominous fake...

May I suggest Bruno, that the photo is potentially being interpreted as being "leather trim" when it is probably the leatherette trim found on the Ersatz cloth-covered Filzhelm, as is the original example below. I agree completely with Brian, there is no such thing as an original Ersatz helmet (of any sort) with leather sewn around the circumference.

I wonder if the individual (s) who made the infamous fakes like the one on ebay, was trying to copy the original shown below, when he (they) made these felt shells with the leather trim?

As far as this ebay helme goes one shot of the liner would confirm the legitimacy. The fakers did not have the correct leather nor did they dye it the right colour as the originals. Brian
