There is something smelly here?

Apart from the usual comments associated with the seller.

Hasn't this chipped Batyern General Pickelhaube been adervtised somewhere else?

With a buy-it-now offer at this price, the seller not being a layman, this is indeed more than smelly...

I was going to post this one as well. I don't know enough about these
high end helms to comment on them but I would love to hear what
the experts have to say.

The seller is leaving out an important piece of info. That helmet is a General Adjudant's helmet or perhaps a Bavarian Medical Officer's helmet but not a full Generals helmet. The Bavarian General's Helmet is completely comprised of silver furniture as below.

In addition I have not seen a General wappen that would have 3 mounting pins as shown with the wappen off photo.

John

I have one of these, and as John has pointed out, mine only has two mounting points. These guys were kind of different -- a general adjutant was a guy who was an adjutant in the rank of general officer. These guys generally served a prince or the king. We had a lot of discussion about enamel fakes sometime in the past. and while we were unable to determine an exact test the pictures in this listing make it impossible to see the important details. Photos that just don't show what you need is very common with this seller. 8) 8) 8)

I think this is a great example to Greg about how hard it is to determine flat from round in some chin scales.

This seller usually has (what I consider) nice looking helmets. But then again, I'm a rooky. Does he have a good reputation or is he someone
to be avoided?

Joe,
in the link you provided, it says that the helmet pictured has flat chinscales. I agree the scales look flat but the rosettes look curved.
The rosette showen center row,far left sure looks curved to me.

BTW-- I appreciate the on going lesson.

He has a poor reputation. However, I have seen some good things -- at least I think they were good -- so it goes to prove that you need to take a look at the pictures and the item and know what you're buying.

Those scales are flat!-- or at least I think they are. Sometimes very hard and with Bavarian helmets-- heaven help us all. 8-) 8-) 8-)

This helmet was discussed a while ago. It belongs to a friend of mine and was generally accepted as being some sort of fake. it had three holes, problems with the crown, and a totally silver vertical stripe. Only vertical stripe that is silver that I have encountered.

Was the rest of the helmet good and only the
front plate was bad?

I am not trying to be flip here, but good for what? There are many many police and firemen helmets out there that people have tried to deceive with. What would you do with this helmet? What can you do with this? The best you can do is to cover up the holes in the corpus and try to convince someone that it really is something else. I am a big fan of helmets that are not quite right, but that can be explained a bit. Most collectors strive for examples that are correct in every way that way, you have no explaining to do when you decide to sell the helmet.

It's just like buying a helmet that has really serious problems or is missing some key part that is just too difficult to find. So what do you do? I think Bruno has the right idea, always go for highest-quality. Like an idiot, I do not follow my own advice at times.

What I was trying to ask was--Did they take a good original helmet
and just change the front plate or is it a complete build up of parts?

What do you mean you couldn't resist Gus? Maggie sent this to me about you. Take that!

Greg, I understand. I think it was a good police helmet or fireman helmet that someone changed the wappen on.

Hey Joe,
Is that a slam toward Maggie? You gotta admit, she is kinda cute for an ebay bride (the sloth, but Maggie is cute to, but in another way)

My Bavarian General has 3 mounting points, as did many Bavarian officer's helmets. The details of the enameled wappen are what is salient...

Earlier on this forum, we were never able to completely determine what was correct in what was not. I would appreciate your views. Let me see if I can find the old thread...
