Spike Base Plate

Hi Everyone,
This is my first post on Pickelhaubes.com. I recently got a nice Bavarian pickelhaube and I have some questions about it and it needs a few parts. It have an excellent shape so I would like to get it back as original as I can. It is missing both cockades and the spike base plate on the inside of the helmet. I got a replacement base plate but it is too small. Does the Bavarian helmets have a large base plate? Also, who or where would be a good source for the cockades, original or replacement ones?
Thanks, and I look forward to learning more about pickelhaubes.

Welcome Hannes, Indeed, the photos are essential because there are models and vintages. The chinstraps and cockades are often missing, due to the quick release "post side" system. Rare and expensive in detailed pieces, there are beautiful reproductions;

This is a "cruciform" spike base (cross shape) which is typical Bavarian. What you need is a similar cross shaped spike base support. Unfortunately, I do not know where you could buy one. I did a recent post in the latest find section where I showed my new Bavarian M15 helmet. Take a look at the photos there and you will see what you need.

On another note....some of these cruciform Bavarians just have tin washers over the split brads on the inside of the helmet. Your helmet could be one of these.

Hello Hannes,
Beautiful “troop” helmet, by Bavarian Chevauleger. M86/96 (for side-post)
The base plate is special and unique to this model, and this helmet did have a cruciform steel plate, the lighter stigmata of which are clearly visible on the bottom of the shell:
Bay M86.jpgYou'll need the specific model for this M86 Bavarian helmet, i.e. 3 large lugs, and the shorter front lug;
You'll need to add a 52-55mm Reichskokarde on the right and a Bavarian nickel silver Landkokarde of the same size. Model 1896 with side post for Bavaria.

After 1897, however, this roundel was replaced by a more standard Prussian one in Bavarian color.
