On the battlefield the spikes were often screwed off.
This is a picture, taken somewhere in France on a to me unknown date of Crown Prince Willie and also Kronprinz Rupprecht, Rupert, von Bayern, while the Kronprinz Willie inspects his troops and he is possibly on his way to a nearby medal award ceremony, nearby the front.
I thought this rather remarkable picture showed a fine example of "screwed off" spikes.

Ha, now I understand the combination, Liongules. But I agree with you also here. The uniform of the look-a-like is also quite modest. So. It is not Rupert.
