Square nuts and hex nuts.

Ok this is another "box". We are all comfortable with square nuts. This wappen is held together with square nuts and solder.

An automatic thought is that "hexnuts" are bad or modern. There are two kinds of hexnuts. Steel hardened and brass. The steel ones are regularly bright, magnetic and machined. But what about brass hexnuts/ When did they come into being? This wappen is held together with brass hexnuts then soldered. Solder looks old. Thoughts?

Hi Joe:
My first reaction is that hex nuts are not proper/original on any helmet fittings. I do not know when they were invented but I do not think that this is correct for our period of collecting. It is very easy to chemically darken new solder. The leather oval shown in this picture also looks new to me. I have never seen leather of this finish or colour being used on wappen before. What I have seen is natural coloured leather or pieces of OR's liner being used. Third, I find the brass washers shown here suspect as well. I have never seen brass washers on any OR or Officer helme. They are always tin. My opinion, Brian
