One question...why would 4 out of the 5 have binoculars?? What sort of group would this have been?? Any suggestions?

Probably sentries or lookouts, the same reason they are wearing the stirnpanzer.

The lower section of the letter mentions this position is 60 metres from the enemy lines, Major Hesketh-Prichard (auth. Sniping in France) was telling his British sniper pupils that 400 yards (365 metres) was a good range to "shoot a German head"!
