Strange and Interesting spike base ?????

Hello All,

I recently picked up a Wurt. Dragoon helmet (I'll post the whole story later). The spike base is strange as I have never seen one before so I thought I would post it.

The spike dates from the 1880-1890 due to the style........ and the spike unscrews BELOW the pear ring......

I have heard that this could possibly be a police spike base.... but if so.. did they wear trickters ?

Here is the base 'together'

Mark,
does it look similar to this?

hey joe

one of my posts dropped... i had a pic posted with it seperated.... so.. where did it go ???

yes.. it looks like that... but i think i have located the helmet.. it's actually a wurt fire helmet that someone took the ball off the spike and put a silver plate on the front...

Tell me more about your post Joe... what is that diagram of ?

Also... as a side note.. I'm not getting any e-mail messeges when someone replies to my posts ????

Cheers
Mark

Mark,

You gave me an open invitation for a shameless plug! Well of course the diagram is part of the Neumann catalog. Anyone can view it by looking at page 94 of the Robinson book. There I just had to say it. Of course, you or anyone else reading this thread can buy this wonderful book. I do not think you will be disappointed.

Now that I have that selfish plug out of the way, this is a helmet designed to have spike removed for placing it in a travel case. Compact and cool, this was an obvious upgrade. Chas actually has one of these helmets.
