Sturmbrigade Schmieden

I'm in the final stages of completing my history of the 5th Battalion C.E.F. (Western Cavalry).

I'm wondering if anyone can help me with some background information of a German Army unit which figures prominently during the Battle of 2nd Ypres April 22- 25 1915 (the German gas attack)

I'm trying to provide some description of Sturmbrigade Schmieden which was a formation within the 27th Reserve Corps. I'm curious as to how the unit came about and who the Officer Commanding was. I assume the men came from elements of the 27th Reserve Division?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Steve

I hope this helps you a bit Steve, in the third posting there, there is a description how it was formed.
Also @Glennj might know more about them, our forum specialist about regimental histories and forming of the Kaiser's troops.

Regards, Coert.

That is a great help! I have been referring to Canadian histories. such as the Official History published in the early 60's as well as an earlier attempt at an official history published in 1938. Neither of them have any details about Brigade Schmieden nor do any of the more recent popular histories.

In my history of the 5th Battalion CEF I try where possible to shed a little light on the German units that opposed them.

This will be very helpful. Many thanks for taking the tome to help me out with this.

Cheers:

Steve
