Perhaps someone can narrow this down to a name?? As detailed as the photo is the detail on the helmet is poor. Look at those cuffs.

He has an old-style one-piece cockade.

On the front of the card it lists the new name for the official photographer so it must be after that name was established in 1877 but before the color change in 1896. Any thoughts?

In 1877, it officially changed its name to the Grand Duchy of Saxony (Großherzogtum Sachsen), but this name was rarely used. In 1896, the order of the colors for the flag and the cockades was changed to black-yellow-green. Prior to that time, the color order was black-green-yellow.

could you please do a close-up image of his decorations (specifically the medal next to the EK2)?

Regards
Glenn

Joe,

thank you for the close-up. That must be the commemorative medal for the 1870/71 campaign. One can never be certain, but I have checked the awards of all the IR 94 officers who held adjutant appointments between 1872 and 1878 (thereafter none held the EK2). Only one: Oskar Freiherr von Maltzahn (Maltzan) who was the Regimental Adjutant in the period 1877 - 1883 had just the EK2 with no other published award. All the others had additional awards shown in the Prussian Army Lists. Freiherr von Maltzahn was awarded a Falcon Order Knight's Cross 2nd Class in 1879, so if it is him, that would date the photo around 1878-1879.

Freiherr von Maltzahn rose to become a Generalleutnant.

With regards to the cuffs, Prussian Army Officers always had the lower button undone until the mid 1890s.

I knew you could do it! Thank you for all the help. This might indeed bring this poor guy back to life! I did not know about the cuffs. Thank you!

Joe,

let me elaborate on the cuffs; That is, Prussian Infantry Officers with Brandenburg Cuffs. However, the officers of Leibgarde-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 115 continued with this tradition.
