The last of the Hessians … (leather helmets)

Wow...two discs! I have absolutely never seen that before. I guess we have to accept that some manufacturers did the outside thing and others followed the usual method. Either way its all hauben!

Hmmmmm... food for thought. I had one with two plates inside and out, I thought it was a collector's mistake. Going to have to look into that. I still have both and can put it back as it was. Anyway, I can see the re-enforcement argument, and also know that when it's on the outside, it will leave a ring in the lacquer if removed. On the inside, since they tend to be slightly convex (or concave depending), they don't leave much of a mark.
I can't really see that somebody using a new item was worried about it 'caving in' over time, since it was easy enough to replace a helmet. As far as look go, if I had a private purchase helmet, I doubt I'd put a plate on the outside, since it doesn't look all that good. Maybe these were 'field helmets' which were exposed to rain and weather, so in that case, putting it on the outside for a bit of reenforcement under an uberzug would make sense.
