The day I'll own such a piece of art is the day I can retire from collecting and say like Julius Caesar back in 47 BC : Veni, Vidi, Vici! 8)

Hey James, it is OK, but I like your M1842 better, it is a real soldier's helmet, this one is a parade decoration.

We were in Dresden last summer, went to the GR barracks, and some areas where there were photos taken of the troops. I couldn't help but wonder how many of these helmets were melted at the end of the war when the place was fire bombed.
Ce la guerre. Or how ever the French spell that! :D

"C'est la guerre..."

What about the ones captured by the British and put on display in huge piles on the path of the London 1919 victory parade?
I can't find a better picture but it always makes me wanna cry. If we suppose there was only 1,000 helmets on display that day we can nowadays value that 'silly pile' at least at $1,000,000 (assuming an average $1,000 value per helmet)...

Hey Ron,
If all the helemts of WWI were saved, they would be worth about as much as Vopo helmets are now. It is like finding a rare Mauser rifle wht was sporterized by the man who brought it home, it is truely sad to see, but at the time, it had very little value as a collector's item, but the man who cut it off to hunt deer to feed his family found value in it as a sporter.

I guess you're right; I have a WWI sporterized Lee Enfield myself. But nevertheless that Time Machine someone recently mentioned on the Forum would've come in handy for saving just a few of those helmets... :)

Yes, but if you had the time machine, could you really limit yourself to "just a few" helemts? I know I could not, that is why time travel has failed, everyone who has traveled in time has overloaded the time machine, and caused it to crash into the sun, where do you thing the solar flares originate?

That, and the Prussian Garde du Corps parade helmet, are my favorites. I'll never, ever be able to have one, but I love looking at them.

Like the nice one sitting on the table beside King Friedrich August III of Saxony!
