Another good post from Steve....the old way to buy a helmet 50 years ago before internet existed. When I started buying in the 80's we did have photos and descriptions. He paid $275US for the helmet in 1970! :D

The dealer's list ( pg 1) sent via snail mail. I love the postage cost of $1.50 for one helmet and an extra 50 cents for a second one!

I just went online and got a calculation.....$275US in 1970 equates to....$1,829.42US today in 2020!

I remember buying from the old catalogs, back then it was all small stuff I could buy, did not have any money to buy helmets etc.

I had a Manions subscription and used to pour over their catalogs. Unfortunately, the quality of their militaria slowly deteriorated.

Didn't we all ?

I still have a drawer full of their old catalouges. Used to spend hours poring over them. They were actually a not bad reference item in terms of identifying items that I hadn't seen before.

You're right that the quality went downhill and the service level went with it. He finally sold the business didn't he?

No I think that he got wiped out by a tornado !

He once had a 88 muzzle break that I forgot that the auction was getting close and sold for around $100
I also got a few things from him at militaria shows back in the day.

I bought a few things via catalogs but I remember as a teen in the 1980s when a 75 table show seemed large! Those were the days.
