Think You Can Own a Tank? The Rules on Owning Heavy Military Hardware

Great article Peter! I often wondered about this as my Local VFW has a Sherman out front rusting away, I fantasize about getting it, but know it will never happen.

You can own a cannon or a tank, but before you buy either... know the rules!
There as a fellow here in Memphis, Tenn. who owned a tank. He was killed in a motorcycle accident.
I never heard what happened to the tank. He was a "bond daddy "
I have a friend in Europe who owned a couple of U S A Army thanks. Restored and running, but they were
destroyed in a fire .

Too bad that they were destroyed in a fire, a guy in Germany became frontpage news some years ago because he had an 88 mm FLAK and a Panthertank in his garage, I will look for the reference to share it

this is the story of the pensioner in Germany

There was an auction a few years ago that had a German 77mm gun, and I was tempted to bid. John Adams-Graf who I spoke to for my article was my editor at Military Trader at the time, and he told me not to bid. He said, the auction company had no valid chain of custody. The gun had been outside a restaurant for years, but John told me he didn't see how the gun arrived in America. There was a good chance the Army might just show up at the auction and pick it up.

I did end winning some movie prop cannons that I had for a while, and eventually sold. I have three small cannons, including one on the porch. That's enough. I've seen the trouble of moving this stuff, and I had a replica cannon in the garden of my old house. The carriage rotted away after just four years.
