This might make a big difference

Well, DON'T Move it to Wisconsin. We don't want people to get an idea of what all of that 'old junk' in their attics is really worth! Of course, if you want to sell in the West, then the 'other' Dakota during the Sturgis Rally would work.

Jeff posted this on Facebook this morning.

I may have made a few promises on various collector forums to keep you all up to date with the latest OVMS developments here on the facebook page.. so here is the latest news:

For 2015, our dates remain February 26-March 1 at the KEC, Hall A & the East Hall (as before.)

In 2016, though, we will move to our new, long-term date and location. 3rd Weekend in February, at the Kentucky Expo Center - HALL C!

Many of our members (especially those flying in from overseas) have asked "why do you guys have the Show-of-Shows in WINTER?" There are several reasons. 1) Airfare from overseas is lower in the off-season. 2) Starting in the spring, there are scheduling conflicts with other militaria shows, and we would not want to step on their dates. 3) This has traditionally been the time of year when we can get a hall at the Kentucky Expo Center.

Over the past few years the dates have changed a bit from year to year due to scheduling issues at the convention center, and because the folks at the KEC have tried to accommodate our request for a bigger hall so that we can get tables for everyone on the waiting list. Ideally, we would like a date in March or early April, AND a hall that measures 150,000 square feet at a minimum - more would be nice. On top of all that, we need to plan and advertise far into the future, so once we get our dream date and hall, we absolutely need a long-term commitment.

As much as we collectors don't like hearing it, getting EVERYTHING that we want is unrealistic. A few weeks ago we succeded in getting an early April date. We were thrilled.. but it was short-lived. The date a fluke, and could not be guaranteed beyond 2016. Nor could the hall. There was an open date in early February.. but that sure didn't sound good to us. So, this Wednesday a committee from the OVMS Board traveled to Louisville to meet with the administration of the KEC, the Crowne Plaza Hotel, and the Convention & Visitor's Bureau. With the entire group in one room batting ideas around, we reached an agreement that should work rather nicely for years to come.

We won't be needing the OVMS theme Hawaiian shirts anytime soon - our date for 2016 is the third weekend in February. It is, in fact, the date that we have had for the vast majority of years that the SOS has existed. Unlike in previous years, however, the same weekend is promised to us for the foreseeable future. Better yet, we're moving to Hall C. This is the big hall with the huge curved glass lobby that you see right as you enter the main gate. Hall C comprises 166,500 square feet; as much as we currently have in Hall A and the East Hall, with about 4,500 extra to spare. This means that we can have the show in one large continuous room, AND accommodate many of the folks on the waiting list for tables.

We also made a lot of progress on other improvements for the show, many of which are the direct result of ideas and suggestions submitted by OVMS dealers, members, and patrons. I have asked you guys and gals for feedback several times on the forums, and you gave me a lot of great stuff. Some things we (OVMS and / or KEC) simply have -0- control over.. but there was plenty that we were able to implement. We discussed security issues, extra food vendors, places for folks to sit and rest, extra ATMs in the lobby, having the concessions open on Thursday, ideas for the dealer drive-in, organized off-campus tourism and shopping opportunities for spouses, and much more. Thank you. When you think of something that might improve the SOS (as well as the Wilmington Shows or the MAX), please let us know. The best ideas really do come directly from the membership.

The OVMS was not the only show to run into a serious scheduling conflict for 2016. Ron Dickson's National Gun Day was also bumped, but as of the time of our meeting on Wednesday, He and the KEC had not yet been able to agree upon a date and hall. I know that many of our members enjoy browsing both shows in the same weekend. Due to the changes in hall / date availability at KEC, having both the OVMS and the National Gun Day shows on the same weekend was simply not an option.

Our neighbor starting in 2016 will be a familiar one, though: the Carl Casper Custom Auto Show. According to the KEC, the Carl Casper folks are pleased to have us as neighbors again, a sentiment that the OVMS shares enthusiastically. There have even been rumors of some ideas for cooperative efforts to provide extra opportunities for attendees of both shows. I have not spoken with them directly about what they may have in mind, but I am looking forward to it!
That's all the news from this week at the OVMS. As Greg reminded me with a grin this Wednesday, "only 16 more weeks until the SOS." Lots to do before then. As newsworthy bits come up, I'll post them here, and at the new OVMS website, which we are getting ready to kick into gear. Stay tuned.

Remember - no change for 2015 - same dates and hall as advertised. 2016, though, different date and a bigger hall!

Nice, looks like we will all be in same hall in 2016, would love to have an Imperial section where we are all close to each other.

I am glad that they are able to keep the show in Louisville, Changing the date by too much or moving it would have a negative impact on the show even if it was moved to Fargo. I thin having it on a different weekend as the NGD show will not be that big of a negative impact, it should keep SOS a thriving show through the week end rather that having to threaten the dealers to keep them from moving to the NGD show on Friday.
I am also glad that is is still a winter show, because if it was April or later, it would not be possible for me to attend.

I very strongly agree. Maybe Jeff can help us with this. Once a long time ago Mark Avery organized us in one area and it worked great. This would help not only the show shoppers but also the table guys. This would really improve knowledge and be very very helpful for the shoppers. It makes so much sense that it is too sad it's not being done automatically. Every year there seems to be somebody who wants to go off on his own for some reason but at the end everyone ends up congregating at the same darned tables. This is made really tough if they are far apart. Efforts to move tables together have not been successful in the past however,OVMS seems to be looking for ways to improve. Putting all the Imperial guys in one place would really be a boon for everyone. Of course there will still be some – very few mind you – that will not want to be around "those guys." They have enough knowledge on their own.

Well, I'm not loving the third weekend in February date but the bigger hall sounds really good. Just you wait... I'm sure there will be a lot of complaining. I saw the biggest complaints on some other forums were that Wednesday has become a sales day. Some people think it should be a "drop off only" day.

I love to complain, but I can not find anything to complain about when it comes to SOS.
Joe, the problem with getting an imperial section is that it can not be done by the show organizers, it has to be done by the table holders or their are going to be complaints from the people who do not want to be included. One logical reason for not dividing the show into areas of interest is that many of the dealers cover several areas, and if they get stuck in the nasty section, they will have difficulty selling nice stuff. Mark did a great job of organizing a section, but that effort was scuppered the next year because he was waiting to get information from all in the group, one member had reserved his table with out letting Mark know, and as he waited for that information, the rest of us lost our tables. Getting some one to herd the cats is not likely to happen again.

I agree with you on that one Gus. While I do like to browse the gun show the truth is that it is a crowded mess and I tend to rarely find anything. I think this will keep more dealers at SOS too. I sort of understand the desire by some dealers to pack up and head over to the gun show, but what boggles the mind is why anyone who attends the gun show and is looking for militaria wouldn't want to head into SOS? That part never made sense.

Guys - send me a list of tableholders that wish to be united under one Brigade, and I will submit it to Greg as a personal request. He is very receptive to this idea already - he knows full well that there are groups of friends that like to be together for mutual security, fellowship, etc. When a show lay-out has been in use for a while and other people would need to be involuntarily moved to make it happen, this is not possible. HOWEVER, when we are working with a completely new layout.. well, imagine the possibilities.

If I was doing it, I would simply move EVERYBODY to new locations, that way nobody could complain about being the only one made to move. Thank your lucky stars Greg is in charge of such things! He will probably try to keep folks within the same basic geographic location in the hall, since that minimizes the foot-stomping and whining that he must deal with.

SO - no guarantees, but if it can be done, it will be done.

You know someone will complain. Someone will always find reason to complain.

I'm actually waiting to hear "the show is too big." Usually that comes from the guys who had three or more tables and didn't care that there was a waiting list.

Thanks Jeff – let me do some behind the scenes work and see if I can come up with such a list. The point you bring up about fellowship and security make immense sense. It is probably also true that this cannot be done in one "island" but rather in one area. Some of the dealers need to operate in what they see as the best location. This is probably too hot a political football but I would be very pleased to be able to point to your tables or Larry Stewart's and say "check those guys out they normally have good stuff at a good price." Let me do some checking around. I am done with symposiums and presentations for a little while. I sure welcome one big hall instead of the left turn area that we have now. It would also be great to have less people or no people on a "waiting list." Sounds like there are some real improvements even if the weather sucks! :thumb up:

Joe, We could get together with everyone at the show this year, I do not think it would be possible to make the changes for 2015 SOS, but if we are going into a new hall, everyone is going to get their table location changed.

Hey Peter, I have something to complain aobut, all the tables do not have
GPS waypoints assigned to them, that would make it easier to find our way back to our table.
The girls did have a complaint a couple of years ago, it was about the porn being sold visible to the public. When the complaint was taken to people in charge, the problem was fixed fast! For those of you who have not attended, this is a family friendly show, you see more couples and families there than you will at NGD.

Okay Jeff – great offer. At the current time would like to put the tables James LeBrasseur, Randy Trawnick, and Peter Suciu together at a minimum. This will really make a central hub that could work for 2015 and 2016 whenever you can manage. If there are other tables – who would like to join let me know your desires. Jeff this is very kind of you. Somehow I think that Peter's dad and I might be holding the fort more than we had bargained for!

Joe--
I believe all the tables will remain where they are for 2015, but it will be for 2016 and beyond that we can move together. Moving for one year (2015) would be too much work for the OVMS I believe. But I look forward to being with the group starting in 2016.

I agree with Peter, we can discuss it at the show this year, it would be nice if we could get Jon Kitts and Jeff Noll in the group, and Bill Combs and AGM would be nice too:)
