Tientsin 1905

Thanks Joe, so glad you're still enjoying the site.

I got most of that East Asian organisation info from "Uniformierung und Austrüstung der Ostasiatischen Truppen des Deutschen Reiches 1900-1909" by Jürgen Kraus in Zeitschrift für Heereskunde Nos 375, 382 and 389 (unsure of last edition number).

Cheers
Chris

Great photo, thanks for sharing, Joe. But unlike the other figures on this page showing chaps from the East Asian Expeditionary Corps and Occupation Brigade this guy is from the III Seebatallion (note the eagle on an anchor on the Tropenhelm).

Cheers
Chris

Okay this is an extremely large picture of a platoon of natives with a European leader. The picture was taken in Shanghai. What are your thoughts?

Great photo, Joe!

A very tricky one too. Is the officer German? His uniform doesn't look German... sword could be? The most German looking things to me are the other ranks ammunition pouches and number 2 on their shoulder straps...

Could be some kind of unit of the Shanghai Volunteer Corps?

Thanks for posting, Joe, I love a good mystery!

Cheers

Goodness if you do not know…

:D Sorry, but my reputation clearly exceeds me!

Can anyone identify the rifles? Could they be G88s? :???:

I have a suspicion that the people on the Uniforms of the World Forum http://uotw.heavenforum.com/ might be able to help, they've studied Shanghai uniforms before. Do you mind if I ask them?

Cheers
Chris

The Rifles do look like Gew 88s to me, I can not see a modifacation for loading with stripper clips, so I suspect that they are unmodified 88s

Look to me like the Shanghai Municipal Police:

A very paramilitary type police force.Photos later from 1940 here:

Peter, I think you're probably right on the Municipal Police.

Gustav, thanks for ruling out the G88 theory.

Joe, I've put the photos up here- http://uotw.heavenforum.com/t775-shanghai-municipal-police-or-volunteer-corps#2611

Let's see if they can offer any more clues...

Cheers

Joe this photo is fantastic! What year is this? Where did you find it? The Chinese loved the Commission Rifle so much, they bought machines and tools from Steyr, and manufactured them on their own. Their version was the Hanyang Rifle, used all the way up until the Korean War.

Comment was placed on Flickr by one of our members George. Municipal police??? There is a caption front and center on the picture but it is written in Chinese! I am far too old to go back to school.

Peter,

I am not convinced. What we really need is someone who can read Chinese. It would be wonderful to know what the caption is and what it says on their jackets. A good mystery!

Funnily enough I might be going to Shanghai next month. If we haven't solved the mystery by then I'll take a copy of the photo and see if I can get someone out there to explain the text...

Cheers

Frank Bucholz was also trying his Chinese connection.

this is from him.
Joe: the Chinese soldiers are carrying German M/88 rifles and the commanding officer is having a German style infantry officer's sword.

The rifles they are armed with are Gewehr 88's. Steyr sold a load to the Chinese. The ones pictured are made either by the Austrians or Germans. Steyr made them by contract for the German Government from 1889 - 1891. They continued to make them until 1894, and it appears many ended up in South America dated 1894.

Gus, does the European seem to be wearing a KuK style hat, emblem wise?

Joe, I love this photo! Thanks for posting it.

Perhaps it might benefit to post it also in the German Colonies and Overseas Expeditions section too?
