Then comes Philippe. He was able to spot the "Verlustlisten" of GR89, 5. Kompagnie. We do find Grenadier Franz Gaede II, from Herzwolde, Neustrelitz, who was killed in action in Carlepont (Oise, North East of Paris) in December 1914.

Hi Bruno,

You are showing us one of the scarcest helmet of the second Reich, like I love them, with trackable name in it. This is one of the best garantee of originality you can have.

This rare Wappen is looking good to me too, especially the center which is NOT showing the 4 or 5 soldered points (which are most of the time the proof of a fake plate). Could you show us a pict of the back of the wappen, how the center is hold on the Strelitz sun?

Now you have to learn German and read the "Regiments Geschichte" of the GR89, especially the pages related to the furious trench-fights near Carlepont (9-25.12.1914).

Here is the link to it:

https://portal.dnb.de/bookviewer/view/1031691308#page/n0/mode/1up

It´s told there that especially the 5/89 had big human losts during the fights of the 21 and of the 25.12.14 as white and black french soldiers attacked its trench sector. You will find at the end of the book a small map (Skizze 2: Weihnachtskämpfe 1914) showing the central front sector occuped by the II/89 during those late December days, just between the III/89 on its right and the I/89 on its left.

Excellent helmet as always! So good to have an owner name and history along with it. :thumb up: We have been baking in 30+C temps and high humidity here.

Thank you gentlemen for your nice comments. Jaap, I fully share your compassion.
I stressed the provenance of this helmet but I did not, as Philippe did, remind you that it is indeed a very rare model, worn in only one battalion of GR89. Quite a few fakes exist.
Philippe, thank you very much for your comments and help with Ranglisten. I am not fluent in spoken German but I am okay reading it. I have started the IR89 history book you sent.
The white metal center is affixed with two leather tabs. These are old and look fragile. I did not dare taking the center off.

Hi Bruno,

These are good news! Solder at this place would have been a big red flag [-X
And yes, I agree: a II/GR89 original helmet is an extremly scarce one. You will not see a lot in a collectors life time. To own a good one is a real challenge! I would not hesitate to let some of my best helmets go if I could find such a good one with tracked wearers name!!! I simply love Mecklenburg helmets!!!

One of the scarest helmet and here with its History thanks to the name of the soldier. It doesn't get better than that!
That's the type of helmet for which I surrender to find one exemplar. Too few still existing...
