To Shine or not to Shine?

Good morning, gentlemen:

For those of you with a garde du corps or garde reiter helmet--or even armor or anything else shiny--do you all polish and shine your metal items? I ask because I am at am impass in making a decision on whether or not to display my new helm as it would have been worn or to leave it untouched. I ask because I keep hearing about people being afraid to ruin items or destroy their value by polishing them, but I am well aware of the Smithsonian polishing items; and I believe that at least the major French museums do polish their armor--and even laquer them to minimize polishing frequency.

Appreciate the feedback before I go through the motions.

No polishing, especially on tombak helmets (GdC...). Depending on %s of metals, polished tombak may take a pale, pinkish colour. Not pretty at all and it will take months if not years to return to the dark, warm, yellowish shade of the nice tombak patina.

Well, I appreciate everyone's feedback. I think I will leave the piece as is--I just had it professionally conserved, and now I'm ready to enjoy it.
