A curious queston to the restoration experts: How does one repair the large tear in the back?

Can anyone work "miracles" with something like this, and repair that large and ugly tear?

No way to do it without reshaping the helmet, gluing a leather patch on the inside of the shell. Then filling in with shellac finish. Brian
 
Maybe worth it if at least the liner was present. Unfortunately...
A pity as this is a rare Offizier Tschapka with detachable metal mortarboard.
