Two Prussian OR Reserve helmets side by side

It is raining so I thought I would post my latest helmet, the Prussian Reserve OR helmet on the right, with one I already had on the left.

Interesting on the cross on the left it is raised more from the wappen and appears to be silver. One on right is more level with rest of wappen and is same color as wappen. One on right shows some damage on the scepter as well as the cross.

Now when you look at the liners it shows the differant types. One on left is standard OR liner, new one on right has Private purchase liner.

Nice markings on inside of left helmet, no markings on right helmet.

Now IMO the coolest part is the period repair on the inside of the Right helmet visor, never seen a repair done like this...

Thanks

James

Another one of my soapboxes – I think James hit it on the head calling it a private purchase liner. For some reason these have gotten the name "pre-1880 officers liner". I have not seen that substantiated but you could buy that kind of liner right up to the war.

Hi James,

Great helmets, and a very nice comparison! :bravo:

That's a cool repair, I've never seen anything quite like that. It certainly makes sense. Great example of German "frugality". =D>

All the Best,

Alan

I'll change my lexicon regarding the private purchase liner.

Not so sure I would jump on that yet. It may be one of Joe's soapboxes but I do not think it has gained acceptance with what I call the "absolute school." This is one of those arguments were questions and examples are met by silence. I would just like to see a discussion on the subject.

The only helmet I have with that type of liner is a Beamte. It has a date of 1909, but may be an earlier repurposed type. So I guess the mystery continues. (?)

Hello gentlemen,

My Kaiserliche Schutzmannschaft (Imperial Constabulary) Polizeiwachtmeister (Police Sergeant-Major) Pickelhaube M1895 has a similar Eigentums-helme type liner:

Well there you go. Like I said I challenge the naming this "pre-1880 officer's liner" but I think I am in the minority. Just another piece of data.
