Looking at the biddings at least some people believe it to be genuine ...
It has the markings "ET" and "SRS".

I thought it was kind of cool myself. I've never seen one either, but I believe there is at least a chance it it real.

I also have never seen such a piece before but it's construction and appearance seem to be real. For instance,...chain mail shaped to fit a helmet with a hole for a spike and an extra steel plate on the front????
