Uhlan knebel?

Recently picked up a late war Mannschaft Uhlan helmet missing the knebel on the top that holds the cap cords.

This is the first one of these late models I've had.

Can anyone give a detailed description... or better yet closeup photos... of what these "knots" look like, how they are constructed and how they attach???

I really appreciate any information.

Hi Roger,

Two basic types, one is flat leather strip looped around a wooden dowel, the other type is layers of leather glued together, carved to shape, and lacquered, but still has a flat leather strip looped around it. Tony

The loose ends of the leather strip run inside the mortarboard; they're tied to
the metal "tongue" inside the mortarboard neck.
They can be fairly easily fashioned from a bit of dowel pin and some flat leather strip.

The one pictured here was made at home; in fact, the whole Tschapka is a replica.

Hi.
Thanks for the compliment.
I'd be glad to oblige with photos of the liner, but it's been sold.

The inside was the typical squared tongues
that formed a circular opening under the mortarboard neck.

The shell was made of vacuum-formed ABS sheet---much like the interior of a car, just smooth.

I gave up on finding complete originals at a decent price and started mounting original plates, etc. on ABS shells several years ago.
