Uhlan9

Hi..

I know that some of you don't like Uhlan9's helmets. I was offered this Tschapka from him. What do you think? Why is he so 'bad'? I mean his feedback is great....
Should i buy or stay away?

Thanks

Doc

I wouldn't bid on the Saxon helmet. Too many things look odd, from the liner to the visor and the mortarboard. Maybe an original that was very clumsily resurrected hard to say.

Hey Doc,
There are a few things that I can see that do not look right, but before you even look at the helmet, the first question is, was this a second chance offer? If so, do not accept unless you have written directly to the seller. Most second chance offer are bogus, and there is usually no recourse. As for the helmet, the liner is one of the never seen round finger types, the Kockarden look odd, the holes for the Wappen should be gromited and the cord is too clean (I can not remember the right term, and these are just my opinion, but I am sure there are others who can find more to discuss)

Doc- he may have excellent feedback, but very few if any are from the more knowledgable collectors. he keeps popping up with rare helmets that look good at first until you look close and see the mistakes.

This one in particular has problems, the guys above pretty much laid it out, the liner is not the correct liner for starts..

Again, this is just my opinion, and hate to see anybody get burned, it has happened plenty of times to me over the years, and it is no fun!!!! :x

You did the correct thing and asked her first!,, this is one of the many great thigns about this forum :D

Apart from everything else, I like the way he's taken the trouble to hammer on a cockade that does'nt even need to be there in the first place. I'm not sure he really know's that much.

I would like to confirm everything is written above is true: his items look at first glance very good, but afterwards you can find one, two, three points which are not correct. His description in a French-German-English is worse than mine....un-understandable!

Maybe he has got good fedback for sending quickly his parcells....but when I look to his items I stay very prudent.

I see what looks to be 2 sets of holes for the wappen they are close together ,but as gus has mentioned there should be gromets in the holes .and gromets in each set if reissued ,I have noticed any way . The
cording looks to be repop .
If you look at even his common helmets something is wrong and you have to look carefully .I to liked alot of his stuff but asking here first is is a really good idea .

I have had two experiences with Ulan9. In each case the helmets were picked up at very good prices (maybe because everybody else was already aware of Ulan9's dodgy practices). The helmets themselves was partially right - A Bavarian Chevaux Leger pickelhaube mostly correct but with a little bit of regluing, some repro kokarden and some replaced nuts. The second was a M1895 pickel with numbered cover: the helmet was mostly correct but damaged lacquer, shrunken body. The uberzug was original but the red felt numbers failed the black light test. So, in each case the helmet was an original piece but had been messed with. Ulan9, of course, will deny any suggestion that his helmets are messed with.

My options were to send the helmets back at around $50 in shipping costs (very expensive to germany for some reason). I could have left negative feedback but would certainly have received the same in retribution. In the end I just kept the helmets and left no feedback at all. I am guessing that others have faced the same dilemma, hence Ulan9's good feedback ratings.

Feedback is a problem. No one wants a red one so no one gives a red one. I gave one once because a part was described to be fully and original silver plated and even confirmed so in an extra inquiry to the seller. Then it turned out to be nickel, badly polished and partly smeared with shoe cream to look like blackend silver.

Probably the seller did not even know the difference and got it that way herself. Anyway she did not take it back, I did not want a law suit, so what the heck. And presto I got a bad rating myself.
