Ulanen Offizier

Many of you are perhaps familiar with then ground breaking uniform studies and illustrations of Andrew Mollo and Pierre Turner in their "Army Uniforms of World War 1" published back in the late seventies. Mr Turner based his studies from period photographs although often with subtle alterations to depict a particular subject. I always remember this particular fine example and this is a case in point. Described as a Major , 3rd Landsturm Squadron VII Army Corps (Ulan-Regiment Nr. 5), Belgium,1916. I then came across our old friend in the Doorn photo collection. Although not identified, he is the then Oberst z.D. (later Generalmajor) Hippolyt Freiherr von Gemmingen-Guttenberg, one time commander of Ulanen-Regiment Nr. 19 and then commanding Mobil-Etappen-Kommandantur Nr. 2 (mobile loc headquarters).
