This is an early umpire Uberzug which covered in most cases a cloth Uberzug. This one has only four hooks. Never had more than four. Later umpire Uberzugs that I have seen have the private purchase visor fittings.
Can you tell memore abt this umpire covers? these were used during peacetime, I suppose? Together with the cork haube, which I am surprised to know that the fittings were made of wood!
Have you read this new article? http://www.pickelhauben.net/articles/Uberzug.htm
That pretty sums up all I know about umpire Uberzugs. You can see examples of both times in the article. This one is the only one I have handled that has hooks on it. There is no air vent to the spike, and it is entirely made of one piece. There is no seam in the body. The material is very thin. The hooks are nonmagnetic.
James, that appears to be almost identical. Can you tell me if the left-hand shown hook is magnetic? Bavarians allegedly used black lacquered steel hooks -- they would be magnetic-- and that one looks awful dark. Is yours also rather thi  n?
