Dear all,

It was in the Dutch news today that German and British tunnels from ww1 are being unearthed near la Boiselle. Peter Barton is involved in this project and I've posted a link with two interviews with him about this recent project.

About the underground war:

Great link:
To understand this better: one great book: "Beneath Flanders Fields" By Peter Barton; Peter Doyle; Johan Vandewalle.

"Beneath Hill 60" is an absolute-must see-top movie.

Thx Edwin.

I have often wondered if these three fellows were tunnelers?

Three unidentified German soldiers, two armed with Gew 98's and one armed with what appears to be a Gew 88/14 rifle. On the reverse:

Dear brother and sister in law!
Here I send you a memory of
how we come out of the position.
Unfortunately you don´t see the dirt.
Moreover I´m safe and sound what
I hope of you too. Dear brother I hope
you are on furlough at the moment.
So now there is...

George, the lamps may fit to their tunneling job, but the rifles were to long to handle in the narrow tunnels of 65-75 cm wide and about 1.20-1.50 m high. But anyway, again a great picture!

Good Day Peter!

I am unsure if they would have ever used a rifle down in the tunnels, but as such, they would be closely billeted in the vacinity of the Front, and the tunnel entrances, so would be required to be armed, at the very least, traveling to & from "work". IMHO. :)
