Uniform Identification

Delius

Hi, This is my first posting, my great grand father Ferdinand Delius is the subject in the attached photograph, can any body tell me what the collar patches mean as I have not been able to find another picture with the same type of patch, the epaulets are too indistinct to work out the Regiment which is a bit of a pity. Michael,

It's a nice photo of a handsome couple, but unfortunately, there is not much to go on regarding your great grandfather's unit. I can tell you that the tunic is a model 1903 gray Litewka (undress jacket). The shoulder strap number looks like a "12" to me. Even with that information, it is difficult to tell what kind of a unit it was without there being any color. It could be the Grenadier Regiment Nr. 12. Where was he from? Is there any additional info on the photo, such as location of the photographer, date, etc.?

Thank you for the reply, my great grand father lived in Spandau, Berlin, in 1914 he is living at Ackerstrasse 40 so he must have joined at the beginning of the war. I have been told that he could be in the Landsturm. I have received from the German War graves commission the following record :- Name, Ferdinand Delius, Rank, Wehermann, Unit, 3 /Brig. ers. btl. 11, Buried Vladslo. 06/06/1915, this is the correct year of death, I take it that the unit is :- Koniglich Bayerisches Brigade-Ersatz-Battalion 11. Does the uniform and record agree ?, could he have been transferred during his service ?, there is a Landwehr Brigade no. 12 in Berlin.

I take it that the unit is :- Koniglich Bayerisches Brigade-Ersatz-Battalion 11

actually, most probably the Prussian Brigade-Ersatz-Battalion Nr. 11 which was recruited from the citizens of Brandenburg.

Here you can see the 11. Infanterie-Brigade recruiting district (Landwehrbezirk) from which Brigade-Ersatz-Battalion Nr. 11 principally drew its manpower. Spandau can be seen just to the west of Berlin.
