USMC Dress Helmet

Well, I missed one of these at the Baltimore Antique Arms Show this spring, but a week ago at the Michigan Antique Arms Show a regular dealer offered this to me. I couldn't pass it up. He has collected USMC items of the 19th and early 20th century for years.

The chinstrap might be a later replacement but the body is absolutely correct, this is the correct USMC spike base, the EGA is correct and the side buttons are spot on! I really don't trust any of these but it came from a reputable collection and the price was right. I believe this to be a true M1892 USMC dress helmet!

Excellent example Peter and a great piece to add to your collection! Congratulations.

Two great helmets
Thanks for sharing
Question ;
on the first helmet parts of the eagle front plate look dark
like tarnished silver
Is part of the plate area silver ?
the 2nd helmet , the front plate seems to be all gilt
Thanks

Just like today the officer EGA device was mixed metal; silver and gold in color.
The enlisted EGA device is a single color, gold.

I once heard a rumor that the President's Own, Marine Corps Band, used a mixed metal EGA device, but the colors were reversed from those of an officer's pattern. I never verified this however.

Semper Fi,
John :)

BTW Very nice addition to your collection Peter!
